How To Find Your Personal Style

Personal style is important, I’ve written about it before. It’s so important that I’m writing about it again. Style is how we express our internal experience to the external world, so I think it’s something we should take the time out to carefully create. After all your reputation always precedes you. Building a mindful closet helps us to be more conscious consumers, helps us get less carried away with trends and eliminates impulse buys. Here are five of my favourite tips in finding your personal style.

Step 1:
Gather Inspiration.
Inspiration is anything that delights and brings out the best in you. It gets your creative and expressive energies flowing, and the best thing about inspiration is you can literally find it anywhere and in anything. Just figure out what it is you like. Nature is my favorite resource for finding inspiration, and Pinterest is a close second. Search out style icons, create boards and pin images that appeal to you.

Step 2:
Identify & Name Your Style.
I’m the kind of person whose style usually goes with what I’m feeling so I have various style personas, but fundamentally I like things a certain way. Pick three words that describe your style and then build on that. My three words are classic, timeless and feminine. What are yours?

Step 3:
Shop Your Strengths.
What this means is that you shop in ways that allow you to complement and dress up your best features. Pick colours, styles and silhouettes that complement your body shape, skin tone, nice legs, beautiful smile or whatever feature it is that you love and brings out the best in you.

Step 4:
Shop For Your Lifestyle.
This is so important cuz yes we want to look fabulously stylish, but we also want to be able to engage in our daily activities and be comfortable doing so.

Step 5:
Shop Smart
Don’t just buy things for the sake of buying things, that’s how we end up with piles of clothes we don’t wear or don’t like and it’s destroying our minds and more importantly our planet. We don’t need to be doing things like that. What we do need to be doing is shopping to fill the gaps in out closet. This is good for us because it boosts our ability to create multiple outfits from what we have, it causes us to invest in quality pieces that we will actually use and love, and it helps us present ourselves uniquely to the world whilst being a superhero and saving the planet. Really consider buying only what you really need and will use. It makes a huge difference.

I hope with these tips we have a foundation for building up our personal style. Let me know in the comments if there are any other tips and tricks I missed out on. Until next time.

Yours truly, Chalya.
